Maddie's New Room

This post is brought to you by Maddie!!!
For my 13th birthday, I decided to re-do my room. We painted it purple in 2007, that color was getting pretty babyish! Two of my awesome grandmas gave me money to buy the paint and my other awesome grandma made my bedspread. My mom helped with moving, taping, etc. My amazing dad did most of the work though, Thanks dad!!!!

My old door...
My old bed.....
My old arrangement.....

This was one of the funnest memories I have had, and it was totally worth it! We might add cute accessories, but for now, that's all we got. Thanks for reading this, I'll be here all night! :D

Goodbye Hazell the Hamster

We're pretty sure Hazell died of natural causes. Hamsters live 1.5 to 3 years and she made it 2 years so...Maddie did a great job taking care of Hazell. We asked if she wanted another hamster and she said no, it will be nice to not have to clean the cage anymore.

Max's brown belt

On April Fools Day, Max received his brown belt. He's really looking the part of a karate boy! He's amazing to watch.
The ceremony lasted about an hour. Seth started wiggling his tooth to keep himself occupied and out it came.
Yay, Max! He's quite sweaty, he deserves that brown belt.
Max's fan club. Maddie, Uncle Lincoln, Seth, and Jon (laughing at someone in the distance.)

Cabin with the WHOLE family

Since it was conference weekend we decided to all go up to the cabin to watch it there. Tanner has learned to make "survival bracelets" out of parachute cord. I'm not sure how it can save your life...but it does. All the kids put in their orders and he made them one. Kept him busy.

Here's a cute picture of Seth.
Since Easter is almost here, well not really, we decided to dye Easter eggs. It's just a fun cousin thing to do.
Here's a cute picture of Seth.
We realized as the noise level rose that we were all here at the cabin. There's usually a dad that has to work or something but amazingly we were all together.

On Your Mark

Tanner and Maddie both decided to go out for track this year to stay in shape. Tanner wants to do cross country next year at the High School and Maddie wants to stay in shape for soccer. I haven't been to a track meet in a long time. One of the coaches asked if I would volunteer to measure the shot put. I learned that track is pretty casual, not that precise since I had students measuring with me, and takes a long time between events that everyone can just walk around watching their team mates and talking to each other. Kind of fun.
This is Maddie running the 1600. She had a big smile the first two times around the track but by the third time she didn't look so happy. She came in 4th or 5th which is great! The view from this school was beautiful of the mountains and the Mt. Timp temple.
Here we are waiting for Tanner to do the shot put.
Go, Tanner! (Grunt!)
Maddie resting with her friends between events.
My sister and her family are down from Denver for their Spring Break. It was so nice because they got to go to a track meet and a soccer game. It was a little hard for my kids to do their weekly things when they'd rather be playing with cousins. What a great support team. Seth is way thrilled to be there. It was actually really hot, which is lucky this time of year.

IKEA scavenger hunt

Maddie decided she wanted to have a scavenger hunt in Ikea. Okay. Maddie and I went the week before and decided what to put on the list. It was a lot of fun!

Hide behind a curtain

Play frisbee with the mouse pads

Cuddle on a couch and act like you're watching tv.

Put trash cans on your head...they're clean.

Pretend to kick a soccer ball
Find Maddie's bed (Since we bought it at IKEA)
Find the biggest stuffed animal

All the girls with their "prize" at the end of the game. We tried to keep score but it got a little competitive so I had to yell over them and say everyone gets a candybar! Then there was peace again. shew.

Maddie's 13!

When Tanner turned 13, Jon and I got him an ipod touch. Maddie took note of this and for the next two years reminded us that when she turned 13 she would also get an ipod touch. I guess it's tradition according to her. They improve every few years, I wonder what they'll look like when Seth turns 13. So here is Maddie opening her present. Even though she knows what it is she let out some huge screams!!!!

She had a party that evening that I will do another post for because there's a lot of pictures. Here she is opening presents from friends. I love Maddie's friends...so far so good.

She picked out an ice cream cake that looks like a pizza but instead of meat and cheese, it's chocolate. YUM!

Tanner was out of there for the party. He actually had a Scout camp out scheduled for that night in the snow and rain. Fun times. And Max tested for his Brown belt that same night. I had my mom and dad help me with the party and Jon took care of the boys. Shew.

Karate Tournament

This is the 3rd year Max and Seth have wanted to be in their annual karate tournament. It's $30. to enter but then you get a $2 trophy so it's worth it. :) They really do have a lot of fun, despite Seth's one defeat. Before that he got a 1st place trophy for being so quick with the sword and shield. That must be his strength.
There was a little mix up with the tournament schedule. I got one email that said it started at 4:15, so Jon rushed home from work to take both Max and Seth. Then right at 4 I got another email that said it actually started at 6...that's a big difference. So I rushed to call Jon so he could turn around and come back home. Then he decided to take Max and Seth to McDonald's before the tournament, so he left around 5. I read the email again and realized they had some events Wed. night and some on Thurs. night. All of Seth's were Wed. and all of Max's were Thurs. I called him back to say Max did not need to go. He said Seth needed his mouth guard. So...I met him at McDonald's gave Seth his mouth guard and took Max home, shew! I didn't stay and eat because they were finishing and it is McDonald's!

Eating a "healthy" dinner to get ready for the tournament.

So happy to have a trophy.

Sword and Shield

Max doing Chanbarra. He received first place in this event and 4th doing his kata.

Guest blogger

Jon was asked by a friend to write something for her blog, so since he wrote it for her blog...he may as well write it for my blog. So, this is posted by Jon.

I am short. I stand a mere seven inches above five feet, and I haven't grown since I was in the ninth grade. My height was something of a challenge for me as a teenager. I grew up in Indiana, the heart of basketball country, and I had no vertical jump or outside shot to make up for my lack of stature. In pictures with my friends, I look like I'm two grades behind them. And I spent the night of my prom looking up at my date who was a good four inches taller than I.

I always felt somewhat inadequate because of my height. I compensated in other ways by focusing on academics and theater while in high school—neither of which made me part of the “cool” crowd but both of which gave me a sense of identity and influenced my current career.

Today, I have four children, three of whom have chocolate-brown eyes, inherited from their mother. In many ways, their nature is also similar to my wife’s: unassuming and confident. I get occasional glimpses, but rarely do I see in them the insecurities that plagued me at their age. My oldest is already a good four inches taller than I am and the next two are on track to make me look like a hobbit in future family pictures.

My youngest son, however, is my spitting image: blond hair, blue eyes, and--if his measurements at two years are any indicator—small stature. It’s not hard to notice in school performances where he stands about as tall as the kindergartners (he’s in second grade right now). In the last couple of years, since he started noticing his height deficiency, I’ve seen him trying to compensate just like I did, but since he’s so young most of his attempts are in the physical realm. He wants to race the car down the block when we drive home from Grandma’s house; he wanted to earn a pogo-stick world record so he jumped 12,000 times in a row; and, like his older brother, he takes karate lessons.

This week I watched him participate in a karate tournament. One event had him wrestling with a competitor that was easily a foot taller than he. As I watched the other boy literally lift my son off the ground and spin him down to the mat, I had flashbacks to my own frustrations as a child. As he left the mat in defeat, I was pained to see the tears in his blue eyes—tears of pain, I knew, but also of humiliation. I comforted him the best I could.

Less than five minutes later, it was his turn to face another competitor—and, yes, this one also stood a foot taller than my son. But without hesitation, my son wiped his tears and stepped onto the mat again. This match was pretty much a repeat of the previous one, and as he left the mat in defeat again, I was reminded of Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, who defined courage as knowing you’re licked before you begin but seeing it through anyway. I realized that, tucked into my arms was a little 8-year-old version of Mrs. Dubose.

How thankful I am for weaknesses that push us to excel, that give us a chance to develop the courage we’ll need to face daunting odds in life. I don’t worry about my son, even though I fear he may be frustrated with being short for a long time. Eventually, he’ll learn to define himself another way, just as I did.

I know he will. I see it in his eyes.

The Mad Hatter

I know this is March and they look like a bunch of leprechauns, but they're not! (I had to spell check leprechaun, that word is CRAZY!) Seth came home with a note explaining that all 1st and 2nd graders who were interested, could do a little "Mad Hatter" dance before the Alice in Wonderland Jr. play. It was like a five minute dance but they would have to go to six practices, a dress rehearsal, and 4 performances. Seth was SO excited to do this! I had to calm him down and say, "Seth look me in the eyes and tell me you will go to ALL of the practices and NOT complain." He committed. So, we did it. It was a bit of work but in the end it was really fun. Of coarse the performances were the most fun.

His cute friend Sabrina with her "stage make up" on.

Sorry my filming is blurry and I don't know how to edit.

15

Yesterday Tanner turned 15. I asked him if he wanted a party this year and he said, "Nah." So I decided to make him have a party by throwing him a surprise party. I had Michael and Daniel come over first because they come over regularly and he wouldn't suspect. They just rang the doorbell and brought him some ice cream, very natural. Then another boy came over and then two boys not from the neighborhood which I thought would for sure give it away. But it didn't. He had a great time hanging out with his friends eating cake and playing Xbox.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TANNER!

Getting some culture

Last week we went to the art museum on B.Y.U.'s campus to see the Carl Bloch exhibit. Right when we walked in it showed a picture of Christ that looked so vibrant and almost 3-D. I haven't been exposed to a lot of art in my life and it was a great experience. Tanner and Maddie were very impressed also. Max was patient and Seth kept asking how long we were going to stay and what time would we eat dinner. After the Carl Bloch exhibit we browsed the rest of the museum. Maddie loves drawing so she thought the sketches were amazing and got some ideas of things she wanted to draw. We were very lucky that so many churches loaned the art to BYU so we could see it and not have to go to Denmark, although that would be fun too.

Canyon hike

I have a great friend, Heidi that was my roommate at BYU. She had six kids and I had four so we didn't see each other for a while there. Then, three years ago we started taking our youngest (her twins and my Seth) on mini field trips to the farm or museum and everyone really liked it. Then our kids started kindergarten half day and it was too hard. Now, all of our kids are in school all day and we never see each other which doesn't make sense, she lives 5 minutes down the road. Anyway, she called the other day and asked if I wanted to go hiking with her in the canyon. To me that sounded a little crazy in the winter, but I really wanted to catch up with her and exercise is good for me, so I keep telling myself. It ended up being a really pretty day and it was beautiful to hike through the canyon. I didn't feel cold at all because we were going at a pretty good pace. Right when I got home, I got into the bath because I could already feel my legs getting sore. I was glad I went.

Jumpin' Fools

One Saturday after we finished cleaning the whole house, Maddie asked if we could go to Jump On It. I didn't think the kids really liked that place anymore but when she said it Max and Seth really wanted to go too. We got there right when it opened at 10 so hardly anyone was there. When we left an hour later it was pretty packed and not as fun. Tanner had a hike that Saturday but I thought he wouldn't have been interested anyway. But he did say "The minute I'm gone you guys go and do something fun like Jump on It." I asked if he was sad for real and he said, "Nah." I did notice older boys were there doing flips and terrorizing kids, so he may have liked it.

Carpool=Survival

Today I had a neighbor call and ask if she could pick up my son for Cub Scouts and I could drive next month when she has her baby. It made me really appreciate carpools. I'm in a lot of them. Seth has play practice every Tuesday this month and luckily he had a friend in our neighborhood. I called her right away to see if she wanted to go in together and of course she did. Then there's karate two times a week that I would get soooo tired of driving to. Fortunately we have four drivers for karate so I only have to pick up (four stinky boys) once a week. We also have a soccer carpool for Maddie and a "going to school" carpool for Max and Seth (The bus comes at 7:12 and they don't have to be to school until 8 so we take turns taking them at 7:50 and have a more relaxing morning). I think I'm pretty lucky to live close to so many helpful people.
